There was nothing but pain for Baker Mayfield this Monday night. His Brows lost in San Francisco 31-3, and the former No.1 pick additionally got humiliated.
Many of you remember his celebration from college days once he planted Oklahoma’s flag on the Ohio State’s logo after one road victory over the Buckeyes. Well, Nick Bosa remembers that too, and he decided to harass Cleveland’s QB for that. After he hurried Mayfield and forced him to ground the ball intentionally, the rookie stood up and started imitating Mayfield’s flag waiving and planting. He was more than eager to get his revenge.
“I think everybody knows what that was for,” Bosa said. “I just wanted to get payback. He had it coming.”
The 49ers DE had two sacks, two tackles for a loss, forced fumble and a recovered one. Pretty much he tore apart Browns’ offensive line. Mayfield ended the night with 100 yards, completing just 8 of his 22 passes, and throwing two interceptions. He would be replaced eventually, as Freddie Kitchens didn’t want to see his QB tortured on the field of Levi’s Stadium.
It was obvious right from the start who will run things in this one. Less than two minutes following the kickoff, Matt Breida rushed for 83 yards to bring the lead to the home team. Following that, the home team continued in the same manner, and Jimmy Garoppolo threw a 5-yard pass to Breida during the middle of the quarter t increase the lead.
Tevin Coleman added another rushing touchdown in the second, after he carried the football for 19 yards. Kyle Shanahan was thrilled with the way his game on the ground worked this Monday. San Francisco had 275 rushing yards, which is superb, and almost guarantees a win. That is what 49ers head coach talked about.
“It’s the easiest way to win. You play real good defense, and you can run the ball, that takes some pressure off a lot of people and doesn’t put you in a lot of risky situations,” Shanahan told at the press.
The final, fourth touchdown came after Garoppolo’s pass to Geroge Kittle. He had 181 yards, completing 22 of his 29 passing attempts. Breida rushed for 114 yards, Coleman 97.
On the other side, except for Nick Chubb, with 87 yards on the ground, there were no players who could compete with the fired-up hosts. Mayfield was out, Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry had 102 catching yards combined, and that is pretty much all from them.
And just to add, that the offensive line allowed 4 sacks on Mayfield, and that they couldn’t protect their QB.
The Browns who are 2-3, will now have to win against the Seattle Seahawks next week in Ohio. It is a very important game for them to stay in the playoff race. On the other side, San Francisco (4-0) is also having a massive contest ahead of them. Garoppolo and the guys are heading for the Coliseum to face the LA Rams, who are not only divisional rivals, but also a potential conference threat as they won the NFC last year.
