Tyron Woodley and Colby Covington want to participate at the UFC 249, and the two fighters are creating a lot of hype in order to force Dana White to put them on the card.
This Tuesday, it was Woodley’s (19-4-1 MMA, 9-3-1 UFC) turn for trash-talking, and the former UFC welterweight champion revealed some interesting things from the past regarding Covington (15-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC). The two were training partners several years while practicing with the American Top Team in Florida.
Now, according to Woodley, he was paying Covington $500 at the time to pretty much suffering a beating during each training session.
“Colby Covington was my training partner that I flew into St. Louis, I paid him $500 a week to pretty much get his ass kicked,” Woodley said.
The two are exchanging insults for a long time, and the cause for all the disputes were Covington’s comments from a few years back, once he took a shot at Woodley trying to draw the attention of the media and some more attractive fighters. The Chosen One stated that he made contact with Colby at the time, and that the younger colleague explained to him that it was all because of a show.
“He’s like, ‘Oh man, I’m just trying to build up the fight with us, we both can make money at the finish line,” Woodley cited Covington’s words.
The tables have turned later, once Covington took the interim welterweight title belt. It was Woodley then who proposed the fight to his rival, but there wasn’t any response from the other side. It is why he won’t repeat his calls this time, meaning that this is his last offer for the contest, after which he won’t be looking back at Colby.
However, if, by any chance, the former title challenger accepts the proposal, that is going to be very painful for him, according to Woodley’s words.
“I’m going to make the choice to break your arm, hurt you. I’m going to dance the line on what’s legal and illegal in that fight,” he threatened.
The UFC 249 is on thin ice, because of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s traveling problems. The champion might be stuck back home in Russia, who will pretty soon close its borders and won’t be able to face Tony Ferguson in what was supposed to be a headliner of the event.
At first, it was scheduled to be at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, but eventually, Dana White had to cancel that show and look for another place. The location of the UFC 249 is still not revealed, and neither is Khabib’s replacement. Dustin Poirier is willing to step in and replace the champion, Justin Gaetjhe has an offer form Tony Ferguson, himself, but nothing is still confirmed.
Meanwhile, some of the media declared that Woodley vs. Colby might be the new headliner, and allegedly both of them responded positively to the idea of meeting one another. If they do agree to terms, we might see one of the most exciting fights in a long time, because both fighters want to have a shot at Kamaru Usman and the welterweight title. And in order to get that, winning this battle is the absolute must.
