Burns’ Convincing Win Over Woodley
The former champion didn’t stand a chance against Gilbert Burns. Woodley was bullied around right from the start until the end, suffering severe damage on his face, and being sent to the floor on a couple of occasions.
He was not even a shadow of once the most dominant fighter in the UFC. The judges didn’t have any doubts in the end when they had to pick the winner, and Burns won his sixth straight UFC contest. The result on the scorecards was 50-44, 50-44, 50-44. This tells a lot when talking about how the fight went.
Burns immediately showed his power int he first round, once he made a cut near Woodley’s left and managed to sent the rival to the floor. It was just 40 seconds since the start of the fight.
He would then continue to harass the 38-year old veteran, hurting him all over the octagon at the Apex Facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. Though we need to add that this octagon is smaller than the usual ones, and that worked in Burns’ favor in this one.
He has excellent stamina, unlike Woodley, who needed to catch a rest in some moments but didn’t have space to back out and avoid ferocious attacks.
Burns Aiming Usman
The Brazilian was pretty direct following the fight, stating that he wants to fight for the title next, which is to challenge Kamaru Usman.
“I want to fight for the title,” Burns said. “Lot of respect, a lot of love for [Usman]. But I think I’m next. I’m next. I’m right there.”
Although he deserved such an opportunity, the situation isn’t favoring this development at the moment, because Usman has other plans.
A few days ago, the champ challenged Conor McGregor to a title-match. It is still one of the hottest topics in the MMA community, and many hope to see that contest. Yet, Conor didn’t reply to that offer, and everything is still open.
Also, we need to mention Jorge Masvidal, who is the No.1 on the list of challengers. However, the BMF title holder desires to book a rematch with Nate Diaz and avoid Usman at this point.
That is why Burns has to wait and see what happens next, hoping that he might emerge as a possible solution.
Woodley Not Good as Before
The ex-champ is definitely behind his peak. After being defeated against Usman, the loss in this one suggests that Woodley is no longer among the best in the welterweight.
“It wasn’t my night. I don’t understand it, but I just gotta trust God that there’s something bigger and better,” he said after the bout.
The Chosen One is much slower than before and is looking without any juice left, meaning that he could be closing to the end of his career.
The next fight, regardless of the opponent, will be the turning point for him. If he wins, there might be some chance to produce something notable in the organization. If not, the retirement is behind the corner.
