Pats Back in Bussiness, Newton Coming to Town
All the media reported this Sunday night that the New England Patriots and QB Cam Newton have agreed to sign a one-year incentive-laden deal. This story was revealed by several NFL journalists, among them Adam Shefter and Chris Mortensen.
“Former NFL MVP Cam Newton has reached agreement on a one-year, incentive-laden deal with the New England Patriots, league sources tell,” Shefter shared on his Twitter account.
Later that night, the confirmation came from the player himself who had one very interesting status on his Instagram, in which he mentions the Patriots.
“I’m excited as I don’t know what right now. All praise to God. Dropping content tomorrow. I hope you are ready. Let’s go Pats.”
The deal is suitable for both sides. New England has only $2 million in the salary cap, and they aren’t risking too much with Newton now. If he fails to deliver the expected performances, Pats won’t have to splash big money. On the other hand, the player has the motivation to work hard and to play at the best possible lever not only because of the contract but also because of the fact that he has a very good team and an opportunity to stay in Foxborough long-term. Each side could benefit from this pretty well.
Newton was released from Carolina Panthers this spring, after nine years of playing there. The franchise from Charlotte picked him first in the 2011 NFL draft, hitting the jackpot. Super Cam won the Rookie of the Year awards, was a three-time Pro Bowl selection, an NFL MVP, and led the Panthers to the Super Bowl 50 where they lost to Denver Broncos.
Pats’ Super Bowl Odds Go Up After This News
Before any news regarding Newton’s arrival to New England, Pats were 25-1 to win the Super Bowl. Right now, the six-time winners are 20-1, without even an official confirmation of the deal.
To win the AFC Conference, NE was 9-1, and now 8-1, and it is quite possible to see these odds improving even more in his favor.
If by any chance, Newton comes near the form from 2015, the Pats have legit chances of attacking the Super Bowl once again. Right now, Newton hasn’t been tested in a game environment, but according to all those who have been around him during his rehabilitation, he looks pretty sharp, and above all focused on his comeback.
Apart from that, Newton wants to prove to all the doubters, and especially to his former team that he isn’t wasted as they believe. Super Cam was pretty disappointed and hurt once Panthers decided to release him, publicly showing his feelings. The team would bring Teddy Bridgewater as his replacement, giving the former Saints’ QB $63 million for the next three years.
