- Manchester City annihilated Liverpool in the derby match of the English Premier League, 4-0.
- Former Liverpool star, Raheem Sterling was the man of the match with two assists and a goal.
- This result casts a shadow over Liverpool’s dominant title run.
- City participates in two more competitions, having a chance to win both of them.
Perfect Game for the Citizens
Even though Liverpool opened the game better, and had a couple of solid chances, all that won’t be remembered. The final result is all that stays in the memory, and it seems that this one will stick around for quite some time.
This was one of the Reds’ worst losses ever since Jurgen Klopp took over the wheel, and definitely the biggest this season. Prior to this event, the new champions didn’t allow more than two goals. Last night, Alisson had to take the ball out of his net three times in the opening 45 minutes alone.
Raheem Sterling was the main reason for that. The former Liverpool player destroyed his guards, scoring one goal and posting two assists. Klopp had to take out his direct rival Joe Gomez, after being unable to slow down the English national team member.
He would get the penalty first, which was executed by Kevin de Bruyne, then score himself, before setting up a goal to young Phil Foden. After the match, Sterling explained that he and his teammates had a massive motive to play the best they could.
“Next season started today and we did well,” he said.
“We were disappointed at times this season having lost some games we shouldn’t have … So we had a test against the new champions and [a chance] to make a point.”
Before the match, City’s players made a guard of honor for the new champions, and that probably wasn’t too comfortable for the guys who won two of the previous titles.
On the other hand, Liverpool’s boss admitted that his team didn’t play well, but also that the Reds lost with a bigger difference than they should.
“They used their chances, and we didn’t. City was 100% the deserved winner, of course, but 5-3 or something would have been possible as well. We had moments where we could have scored, but we didn’t.”
City Aims FA Cup and the Champions League Trophy
Guardiola and his team are participating in two other competitions besides the EPL. They reached the FA Cup semis and are meeting Arsenal there in two weeks’ time. The Citizens recently defeated big rivals with 3-0, and they stand as the biggest favorites for capturing the trophy of the oldest football competition in the world.
Meanwhile, City is also the No.1 candidate for taking the Champions League, where they still have to play the second led of their matchup with Real Madrid. The first game in Spain ended 1-2 for the Sky-Blues, who came back from behind to stun the Los Blancos. That contest should be played somewhere during early August.
