Andreescu Wants to Play at the US Open, Rogers Cup Cancelled

  • Bianca Andreescu supports the USTA’s decision to organize the US Open later this year, despite the COVID-19 pandemics.
  • She is one of the main candidates for winning the same.
  • Meanwhile, Rogers Cup for the 2020 year won’t be played.

Andreescu Supports the US Open

The No.1 Canadian tennis star posted a Tweet of support for USTA’s decision on running the US Open later this year and caused numerous reactions after doing so.

One group of fans and the players are approving her action, while others disagree with one of the biggest tennis talents in the last couple of years.

“I can’t stress enough that the health and safety of not only the players, but of all those involved in making tennis happen again this season is and has always been, of the utmost importance. I have no doubt that the USTA has come up with the best plan to insure our safety as we look to the return of tennis in 2020,” Andreescu wrote.

The debate about US Open’s comeback started this Tuesday, following the decision of New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo to give the green light for organizing the tournament as planned (August 31 – September 13).

Both groups have their legitimate reasons for supporting their claims, and they can’t be judged. For instance, Canada’s doubles player Gaby Dabrowski posted nine of them on her Twitter profile.

On the other hand, the tournament organizers revealed a plan which includes high safety measures, health guidelines, and rigorous procedures, all in order to protect the participants’ health.

Many players are still considering their options when it comes to playing at Flushing. Some big names have certain concerns, while some already declared themselves ready to enter the battle for the title.

The entire situation surrounding one of the most popular sports events in the United States is very complicated, and we are yet to see what happens in the future.

Rogers Cup Canceled

On the other side, things are pretty clear when it comes to Rogers Cup. The biggest tennis tournament in Canada and one of the most prominent in the world is canceled, with the next one taking place in 2021, to be exact on August 7.

As we all know, Rogers Cup is rotated between Montreal and Toronto, with the ladies’ and the gents’ competitions being divided so that each venue holds one tournament.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 situation prevented this year’s edition from happening. The overall situation in Canada is complicated, and the experts found that organizing the tournament in current conditions is simply impossible. Unlike the US Open, the opinions in Canada are different.

Bianca Andreescu won the title last year, introducing herself to the world as the new powerhouse. The 19-year old at the time defeated Serena Williams in the finals after the American legend retired.

Rafael Nadal took the men’s competition, smashing the Russian Daniil Medvedev in the finals, 6-3, 6-0 posting one of the most dominant performances in the history of the title matches at this tournament.
