The New England Patriots and Tom Brady have signed a new deal which will bring the famous quarterback $23 million in the upcoming season.
The contract signed is, in fact, the extension, which should keep Brady with the Pats until the end of the 2021 season. But what is the catch, is that the last two years on that deal are void. It basically means that Brady could be gone after the next season if New England decides not to leave him on the roster.
Void years on contracts all over the league are used in certain situations when the franchise wants to spare some salary-cap money. In this particular case, the Pats received $5.5 million of space for this season.
Meanwhile, Brady becomes the 6th highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. His salary rose from $15 to $23 million. Still, many of the journalists wanted to know what is his opinion about the possibility to leave the Pats at the end of the season. The player didn’t want to talk about that, stating that the only thing on his mind, is the present.
“Football is a tough business. It’s a production business. I’m ready to go this year, and that’s really what matters, and that’s where my focus is,”
Brady told in his interview after the practice NE had with the Detroit Lions.
He knows that many players in the league are in the same situation, and doesn’t want to make a huge deal out of it.
“There are a lot of guys who have one year left on their contract. So the situation — I have one year to go, we’ll see what happens,”
the player said.
The player led his team to another Super Bowl title, their sixth together, becoming arguably the all-time greatest player in his position. With 41 years, Brady was still playing at a high level. He started all 16 games, which is fascinating for a guy of his age. At the end Pats’ QB had 4.355 yards, 29 touchdown passes, and 11 interceptions.
The Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams in the Super Bowl, 13-3, and Brady, despite not having a pass for a touchdown, had several amazing moves which helped the team to beat the feisty Rams.
All this, backs up the stories of the experts who are claiming that the player will probably stay until the end of the deal, and that the Patriots aren’t going to give him up that easy. He is their leader and the guy who established them as one of the most powerful dynasties in all of the American sports.
Patriots have been one average franchise up until they drafted Brady back in 1999. To make everything even more interesting, the quarterback was the last choice that year and was picked 199th overall. Two years later, Drew Bledsoe got injured, and Brady jumped in to replace him. Ever since he has been terrorizing the league with the Pats.
In his first season as a starter, New England won the Super Bowl. They would miss the playoffs the next year, but win back-to-back Super Bowls in 2003 and 2004. Pats waited for 10 years before adding another title, against the Seahawks, and won their fifth Super Bowl in 2016, overcoming a 25-point deficit against the Falcons.
