One of the biggest sensations in the Champions League history happened last night in London. Bayern Munich demolished the runner-up of the competition, Tottenham Hotspurs with 7-2. It is one of the most shocking results ever in the most prominent soccer competition in the world.
But things didn’t indicate anything like this at all, as the home team reached the lead first, with Son scoring after 12 minutes of play. At that point, the majority believed in Spurs’ victory. But only three minutes later, Joshua Kimmich leveled the result. The game went into a quieter phase and this result was active until the last minute of the opening half, when Robert Lewandowski netted and gave the lead to the guests.
The second 45 minutes were all about Serge Gnabry. The German midfielder scored 4 goals, becoming only the second player from this country to score four times during one Champions League match. His one-two punch in 53rd and 55th minute stunned the Spurs, who recovered briefly with Harry Kane converting a penalty.
But the last seven minutes of the contest brought a total collapse of the home side. They have allowed three goals, two by Gnabry and one more by Lewandowski.
“I think the last time I scored four goals was when I was a child! I’m very happy with my performance of course and glad I could help the team to such a big win,” said Gnabry the star of the match.
For Tottenham, this was the second-heaviest defeat on the international stage, after losing 8-0 against FC Koln back in 1995 in Intertoto Cup. The Spurs are not looking great at the moment, and they are already a lot behind the planned. Mauricio Pochettino is facing a tough period, and for the first time since he sat on Tottenham’s bench, the Argentinian’s job is not safe.
“We are disappointed. Every single touch from Bayern was clinical. They scored with every touch. It is tough to accept. You have to move on,” said Pochettino for the English reporters. “They were very clinical. After we scored the penalty for two, we had chances to score the third. But from the 83rd and 88th minute, we conceded three more goals.”
The English media stated that they couldn’t remember hearing booes by Spurs’ fans for a long time, but last night there were plenty of them.
In the second game of the same group, Red Star Belgrade defeated Olympiacos with 3-1. A team led by Canada’s national team goalkeeper Milan Borjan was trailing 0-1 at the halftime, but after one of the guests’ players received a red card, everything changed. The home team became ferocious and in no time packed three goals.
In other matches, Real Madrid proved that they are in a crisis playing only 2-2 at home against Club Brugge. The Spanish giants were back two goals at the halftime. Meanwhile, PSG beat Galatasaray in Turkey with 0-1.
Man City had more problems than predicted against Dinamo Zagreb, defeating the Croats only 2-0. Shakhtar Donetsk took all three points from Italy, routing Atalanta with 1-2.
And at last, both Juve and Atletico Madrid defeated their opponents with 2-0. Juventus beat Leverkusen at home, while Atletico crushed Lokomotiv Moscow’s defiance in Russia.
