The saga that lasted for a few days ended yesterday, with Le’Veon Bell eventually ending in Kansas City Chiefs. The Super Bowl champs added a three-time All-Pro who hadn’t been near that level of play in the last two years.
Bell was released by the New York Jets previously, following a disappointing stint with the team from MetLife Stadium. The Chiefs, who already had problems at the running back position, didn’t want to wait but reacted fast, signing a one-year deal with the 28-year old.
Bell had offers from multiple teams, but those from the Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins were the most tempting ones. In the end, the star player picked the champions because of an opportunity to win the Super Bowl.
“Kansas City, #ChiefsKingdom, thank you for the opportunity 🙏🏾 let’s go!” Bell wrote on his Twitter account, with Patrick Mahomes replying to it: “Welcome, my brother! Let’s get it!”
Even though there hasn’t been any official confirmation from the club, these tweets suggest that the move is already concluded.
The Chiefs’ starting RB Damien Williams decided to opt-out before the campaign even started due to health concerns over the COVID-19 virus. That left the champions with just the rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who, although performed well over the recent few weeks, isn’t enough. His numbers began to drop, and adding Bell is a superb thing for Andy Ried.
Once the best RB in the league, became the third worst when looking at the overall rushing productivity last year, with just 3.2 yards per carry. It was obvious that Bell’s performances were terrible, but the reason for that stayed unknown.
According to the player, the Jets’ offense didn’t properly use him, while on the other side, sources from inside the franchise suggest that the player’s stats dropped because of himself.
What was obvious is that Jets’ head coach Adam Gase and Bell didn’t develop good chemistry and that the team suffered the most in the end. Right now, the Jets have no wins after five games and find themselves in lots of problems. Sam Darnold, who was supposed to be the franchise face, was recently benched, and his future in the NFL is highly doubtful.
NYJ tried to get something in return for Bell, but there was no interest in the market in making a trade, and eventually, they would release the three-time Pro Bowler.
He will have a chance to debut for the Chiefs against the Bills in Buffalo, on Monday Night Football. After that, the champions are heading for Denver to face the Broncos.
