There aren’t many players who know how to handle overtimes like Drew Brees. One of the best ever QBs has 12 OT wins, counting tonight’s one after extra times, which ties him at the top of the all-time list with Tom Brady.
This victory came after a 17-point deficit, something the experienced veteran managed to do just once before. But that isn’t something that interests him, as the 41-year old emphasizes his team’s win, not some stats.
“At the end of the day, these are growing experiences, these are learning experiences,” Brees said. “And to have wins like this, where you really have to fight to win — just like we did last week … this is how you grow as a team.”
He threw one TD pass, had one rushing TD and one interception, with 325 passing yards.
His Saints were down 20-3 in the second period, before he rushed for a one-yard score fourteen seconds before the halftime. After that, Will Lutz, who scored the crucial FG in the overtime, decreased to 20-13 in the third before Jared Cook opened the fourth period with a 46-yard TD to level both teams at 20 points.
But New Orleans had to go through another thrilling finish because of Mile Williams 64-yard TD catch, which gave the lead to the Chargers. The Saints responded through Taysom Hill, who ran for nine yards to force overtime.
Still, even after this, the Chargers had a chance to win the game, but Michael Badgley missed a 50-yard FG in the closing moments of the regulations.
After that, Lutz hit a 36-yarder to set the final result, and the Saints’ defense stopped LA on the next possession.
The Chargers’ rookie became the youngest QB to have four passing touchdowns on Monday Night Football. With 22 years and 216 days, he jumped over Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson, to set a new record. However, he wasn’t happy after the end of the match, because his team lost.
“To be so close in these last four games, it hurts a lot,” said Herbert. “We got to learn how to close out games.”
Herbert had 264 passing yards, 20-for-34, with four TDs, and his favorite target was Mike Williams, who caught the ball twice in the end zone, and had 109 yards on five receptions. Justin Jackson posted 71 yards on the ground.
On the other side, Emmanuel Sanders yielded 122 yards, in 12 receptions, and Jared Cook had 52 for one TD. Alvin Kamara posted 119 yards from the scrimmage.
Up next, the Saints are free before hosting the Carolina Panthers and playing versus the Bears in Chicago. Meanwhile, the Chargers will meet the New York Jets at home next week, and after that, visit the Miami Dolphins.
