The United States President, Donald Trump stated that he would like to see Colin Kaepernick returning to the NFL.
During his address to the media, President Trump received a question about the former NFL quarterback and shared his opinion, which caused huge attention.
The President admitted that he would love to see Kaepernick play again, but only if he is good enough. What he meant by saying that is that he would like to see the QB back because of his playing qualities, and not something else.
“Frankly, I’d love to see Kaepernick come in if he’s good enough. But I don’t want to see him come in because somebody thinks it’s a good PR move,” President stated.
He also said that knowing several owners (especially mentioning Robert Kraft) they would definitely acquire Kaepernick if he had the quality to bring victories. President told that winning is all that matters in the NFL.
“So if he’s good enough, I know these people — they would sign him in a heartbeat. They will do anything they can to win games.”
Kaepernick didn’t play since 2016 when he started his protests during the national anthem. At first, he sat, and after that began kneeling during the anthem protesting because of police brutality and racial injustice in the United States.
Trump reacted after that situation, calling all the owners to fire players who are not respecting the national anthem, and also, for the fans who are hurt to leave games. Though he didn’t say a thing about Kaepernick, it was obvious what triggered his reaction.
The protests during the national anthem started to spread, and there were more and more players who followed Kaepernick’s way.
As for the quarterback he decided to opt-out of his contract in 2017. In October he filed a lawsuit against the NFL, claiming that there is a conspiracy against him and that the owners made a deal not to offer him a contract. The dispute has been settled in February this year, with the player receiving less than $10 million, according to some sources.
Ever since 2017, he didn’t sign for some other team. Whether was that because of his protests, or something else, the important thing is that he is without a job right now.
But that didn’t stop him from training. Kaepernick is practising on his own and trying to stay in shape in case the situation changes, and he gets a chance to play once again. He recently posted a video on his social networks, which show him working.
The 31-year old was picked by the San Francisco 49ers as the 36th overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft. While playing for six seasons for the same franchise, he led them to the NFC Championship game in 2013. Kaepernick holds the NFL record for most rushing yards by a quarterback in a single game -181 against the Green Bay Packers. That was his first postseason start.
During his career, he had 72 touchdowns, 30 interceptions, with 12,271 passing, and 2,300 rushing yards.
