For the second time in the last month, Antonio Brown has been released by one NFL team. The New England Patriots have decided to terminate his contract and to move on from the controversial wide receiver.
Brown stayed just 11 days with the Pats before being released. This information was confirmed by the Patriots organization, with a statement released on their social networks.
“We appreciate the hard work of many people over the past 11 days, but we feel that it is best to move in a different direction at this time,” the team said in a statement.
The reason for such radical action of the current NFL champions is the player’s situation with the sexual assault allegations. He is facing two of them for separate cases.
At first his former personal trainer, Britney Taylor filled one, claiming that the player sexually assaulted her on three separate incidents. During one, she claims that he even raped her without her will. After all this, the second alleged victim of Brown’s sexual assaults appeared.
She is an artist, who has been working on a mural in Brown’s house in Pennsylvania, back in 2017. She also filed a lawsuit claiming that the player violated her rights.
At first, the Patriots didn’t do anything about it and decided to give a chance to the player. But after viewing messages in which Brown threatened the artists, by including her children in the whole story, the reigning champs decided to avoid further partnership with the wide receiver. The messages sent are said to be very disturbing and intimidating, and having in mind the fact that Pats’ owner Robert Kraft had scandals of his own in the past, it is most definite that the Pats didn’t want to draw any of the negative publicity.
Brown played one game for the champs, against the Miami Dolphins, in which he had 4 receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown. New England won the match with 43-0.
AB signed a one-year deal worth $15 million and had a $9 million in signing bonuses. But it appears that he won’t see a cent of all this money. The fact is that the signing bonuses were supposed to be paid in two separate parts — the first $5 millions on Monday, September 23rd, and $4 millions until January 15th.
Brown lost $50 million in Oakland when asked to be released. A little bit more than $30 millions were guaranteed, but that wasn’t too big of a deal for him. Raiders traded for Brown from Pittsburgh, with an intention to make him the leader of the new Raiders’ team. Jon Gruden and the general manager Mike Mayock wanted to make the team around AB, and to attack the Super Bowl at some point.
After being released from New England, Brown is a free agent, and he can sign for any team in the league. What might endanger his prospects of playing is the conduct led by the league and the fact that the commissioner Rodger Goodell might place the player on the commissioner’s exempt list.
More to come on Antonio Brown case pretty soon.
