The Browns didn’t want to risk anything but decided to offer a new extension to their star defender after just three seasons of playing in the NFL. Garrett has two more years on his rookie deal, yet Cleveland wanted to solve his situation as soon as possible and avoid any of the upcoming problems.
According to Ian Rapoport who reported first about Garrett’s deal, a five-year extension is worth $125 million, from which 100 million are totally guaranteed, while $50 million is fully guaranteed at signing.
This will make Cleveland’s edge rusher the highest-paid defender in the league, surpassing Bears’ Khalil Mack, who had $23.5 million per year.
At the moment, Garrett has two more years on his rookie contract, during which he earns $19 million.
Back at the 2017 NFL draft, the Browns picked Garrett as the first overall, and they immediately got one of the best defenders in the league. In three campaigns, he managed to receive one Pro Bowl invitation and one second-team All-Pro selection.
The 24-year old was on his way to take the Defensive Players of the Year award last season, but his scandalous behavior against the Steelers interrupted his quest. Back then he and Pittsburgh’s QB Mason Rudolph got into a fight, and Garrett his him in the head with a helmet. The league would immediately suspend Browns’ player indefinitely.
Later one, the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell reinstated Garrett during February, which eventually saved his upcoming season; otherwise, he would probably have to be out for quite some time.
So far in 37 matches since coming into the league, Garrett recorded 30.5 sacks with six forced fumbles, and has become one of the most respected pass-rushers in the competition.
After giving an unreal extension to Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs decided to tie their best defender for the next four seasons. Chris Jones and the team are about to sign a four-year $85 million contract. $60 million will be guaranteed for injury, and $37 million at signing. Five million dollars are in incentives.
Jones, who is a defensive tackle, was a second-team All-Pro back in 2018, and also became a Pro-Bowler this year. He was the driving force of the Chiefs‘ defense, and one of the most important players during the playoffs.
The 26-year old player played 61 matches for the Chiefs, 41 as a starter, recording 33 sacks, and seven forced fumbles. The 2018 season was his best so far, with 15.5 sacks and 35 tackles.
Kansas City secured its starting QB position with Mahomes’ new contract, and also solved the status of two of their pivotal pieces in defense, as they already signed a five-year deal with Frank Clark back in 2019 once he arrived from Seattle.
