Liverpool received a slap in the face last night, as Reds’ superb run of 27 matches without a loss ended at Vicarage Road. Watford defeated the European champions with 3-0, putting on a massive sensation.
The man of the match was 22-year old Ismaila Sarr, who was a nightmare for the rival’s defense. He and Troy Deeney schooled the Reds’ expensive defense, finding ways to punish the slightest mistakes in Liverpool’s back line.
“Our best performance by a country mile. We’ve felt unlucky at times in the past few weeks. No one gave us a prayer or a hope for this one,” said Deeney, following the game, adding praises to his young teammate in the attack.
All three goals came in the second 45 minutes, with two of them delivered by Sarr taking place in six minutes. The first was in the 54th minute, when Senegalese forward reacted quickly inside the box, reaching the ball before the Reds’ defenders and putting it behind Alisson’s back.
Six minutes later, Deeney made a laser-precise pass to Sarr who lost Virgil van Dijk and Dejan Lovren, and didn’t have any problems to add another goal to his account. We need to point out, that Lovren once again played pretty badly, and that it is no wonder why Klopp doesn’t have trust in the Croatian international anymore.
As time went by following these two goals, the guests became more and more nervous, losing their composure often, which eventually led to another goal in their net. It was Deeney who scored this time, after a huge mistake made by Alexander-Arnold, who gave away the ball directly to Sarr. The Senegalese cooly passed it to the veteran striker, who put an end to all hopes of Liverpool’s fans that they might avoid the first failure of the season.
After this, it was evident that the Reds aren’t going to finish the campaign without a defeat. However, for Jurgen Klopp, this came as a positive thing, because his players were under massive pressure from the public to stay unbeaten.
“Tonight it happened. I see it rather positive. Because from now on we can play free football again. We don’t have to defend or try to get the record we just can try to win football games again,” the German manager explained.
Liverpool is still first in the standings with 22 points more than the second-placed Manchester City. The Sky-Blues have a game in hand, as they face Aston Villa in the English Football League Cup today, and their EPL clash is postponed.
Meanwhile, Watford is above the relegation zone with these three points. At the moment, the Hornets are 17th with 27 points, same as Bournemouth one place lower, and West Ham in the 16th place. Up next, they travel to London to meet with Cyrstal Palace at Selhurst Park.
Meanwhile, Liverpool has obligations on Wednesday. They will clash with Chelsea in the FA Cup, with the note that the game takes place in London also.
