Leon Edwards Aims to Dethrone Kamaru Usman

  • Leon Edwards believes he could defeat Kamaru Usman and win the UFC welterweight championship belt.
  • The British fighter is one of the potential challengers for the Nigerian Nightmare.
  • There is a long list of possible contenders in the welterweight division.

Edwards Thinks he can Defeat Usman

The British fighter was supposed to meet Tyron Woodley, but the COVID-19 pandemics caused this match to be canceled. It was, according to many, a possible title-eliminator, which would decide the next opponent of Kamaru Usman, who is the reigning champion of the welterweight division.

Later, Woodley would go on and meet with Gilbert Burns who defeated the former champion, thus becoming another possible challenger for Uman.

This complicated things for Edwards, the former BAMMA champion in this division, and he now has to wait in line for a chance to attack the title. He has eight wins in a row, and is one of the most dominant guys in the division, but still, there is no invitation in one title fight.

The most recent loss Edvards had was in late 2015, when Usman prevailed in their clash via unanimous decision. It was a long time ago, and the Brit believes he would defeat the champ.

“We’re two different – from back then like five years ago – just two different abilities and what we’ve achieved,” Edwards told. “I truly believe I’ve got everything I need to beat him.”

Edwards really is one of the best, according to the experts, and he did have some impressive wins since losing to Usman. in his latest bout, July 2019, he would defeat Rafel dos Anjos, and prior to that, Gunnar Nelson, Cowboy Cerrone, Peter Sobotta, Vincente Luque, etc. All this gives Edwards a good back up for his claims.

UFC Welterweight Division the Best in the Organization

It is a widespread opinion that the UFC welterweight division stands for the best in the entire organization. Usman is the champion, but there are numerous challengers who want to take his belt.

The No.1 on the list is Jorge Masvidal, whose fight with Usman was projected for the latter part this year. However, the Gamebred apparently wants to meet Nate Diaz and isn’t that keen on getting into the octagon with Kamaru.

According to Edwards, Usman has an edge in that clash, and he believes that the champ would come out as a winner.

“I don’t know who wins. Usman probably – I think Usman is a better all-around martial artist. His striking, wrestling and he can mix it up a little more, good cardio. Masvidal comes out, he’s a good boxer, so I’d probably edge towards Usman on the victory.”

Apart from Masvidal and Burns, whom we mentioned, Colby Covington also awaits his opportunity and wants a chance for a rematch after his recent loss to the champ.

Recently, Usman challenged Conor McGregor offering him a fight for the title, but there was no answer on that call out. So that includes the Notorious in the story as well.
