The meeting of the EPL shareholders was held yesterday, and the conclusion was that the league would resume, especially after the UK Government announced its plans to relax the measures imposed earlier.
The heads of all the clubs were pretty optimistic following the discussion, and it seems that the end of this unpleasant chapter is very close. The recent developments are suggesting that everyday routine in the UK will soon be restored, and as a part of the same soccer will start to function once again.
“We welcome these first steps and are ready to play our part. We are working flat out with clubs and stakeholders – Government, our broadcast partners, The FA, the EFL, PFA and the LMA – to create a responsible, safe, and deliverable model to complete the season,” said Richard Masters, Premier League Chief Executive after the meeting.
The rumors considering the resume of the championship were already in the media for quite some time, but now, that became official.
The UK Government announced the process of relaxation measures since June 1. From that day one, sports and cultural events will be allowed but without the presence of the spectators. However, live streamings will be included, which is a great situation for soccer.
Nobody from the Premiership revealed the precise date of the comeback, but some are suggesting that it might be literally the same day, that is Monday. Certain things regarding the organization are still not precisely planned, and the League intends to include the players and the managers while solving those problems.
According to Masters, there won’t be a decision before consulting the players.
“Our priority will always be the safety of players, coaches and managers, staff, supporters, and the wider community,” he said. “Nothing will be agreed until we have spoken to both the managers and players.”
A lot is at stake for both sides here. At first, the health of all the participants, and on the other side, the reputation of the league itself, as well as the substantial financial revenue.
Liverpool is very close to securing the title, but that is something which was evident even before the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. From that point fo view, the EPL will be boring. However, the race for the UCL spots promises an exciting battle.
Manchester City is suspended form the international competitions, and although they occupy the second spot, the still reigning champs won’t be playing in the most prominent European competition next year.
This practically means that the fifth place in the standings will lead to the Champions League, and right now, several teams will be chasing that spot. Among them are Chelsea, Manchester United, Wolves, Tottenham, Sheffield United, and Arsenal.
