Flames Black Out While Being Up Three Goals

The Stars didn’t even record one shot towards the net, and they’ve been down three goals. It was unbelievable to watch the Flames in the opening six and a half minutes of this contest.

One by one, Andrew Mangiapane, Johnny Gaudreau, and Rasmus Anderson scored, all three goals in less than three-minute span. As we said, the Stars didn’t know what hit them.

They had five in the first period, compared to 15 of the Flames, but luckily one found a way to the net. It was Miro Heiskanen, who scored a powerplay goal, to give some hope to his teammates.

Eventually, it would turn out that Heiskanen’s goal is just one of seven straight scored by the franchise from Dallas, who made one of the most incredible comebacks in the recent history. They would score five in the very next frame, first four in less than seven and a half minutes.

“It was just a mess to start. There comes a point where, ‘OK, that’s enough. We need the next goal. We get the next goal, and we’re back in the game,” Dallas’ coach Bowness stated.

Gurianov’s Show

This was one of a kind comeback, in which Denis Gurianov scored four times, making this his best match in career. He started the whole thing for the Stars in the second.

“Boys just said, ‘Shoot the puck,'” Gurianov said. “I’m glad I got a hat trick and I’m glad we won. It’s the most important thing, moving forward and getting ready for the second round.”

One second short of one minute since the start of the period, Gurianov netted, and at 3:25 recorded an equalizer. That forced Flames head coach to replace his starting goalie Cam Talbot with David Rittich. He would later bring back Talbot after his replacement didn’t make anything positive while playing.

Radek Faksa brought the lead for the first time to Dallas, and Joe Pavelski doubled it. Gurianov would then add his third goal, for his first hat-trick in the playoffs.

With 9:02 in the final sequence, the 23-year old right-winger put an end on his match, completing his poker and crushing all the hopes Calgary had about a possible miracle and a comeback.

“It’s tough. An empty feeling,” Calgary’s Mikael Backlund said. “It’s still just happened. You wonder what happened, things just turned so quickly.”

Calgary ended its campaign, losing the first round of the playoffs with 4-2. It was something they didn’t plan, but it seems that the Stars have far more quality than the Canadian side,

Dallas meets Colorado Avalanche in Western Conference semis. The schedule for this matchup is yet to be revealed.
