Dak Prescott Intends to Sign a Franchise-Tender With the Cowboys

  • Dak Prescott plans to sign a franchise tender with the Dallas Cowboys.
  • Still, this isn’t guaranteeing a long-term deal between him and the franchise, and that is something that disturbs the fans.
  • The Cowboys will have problems with the salary cap next year.

Prescot Inking a Franchise Tag

One of the best players in the NFL will become one of the highest-paid according to sources. Adam Schefter reported yesterday that Prescott intends to sign a $31.4 million franchise tender this Monday, and that he and the team have three weeks to negotiate a long-term deal.

“Cowboys’ QB Dak Prescott is planning to sign his $31.4 million exclusive franchise tender by Monday, a source tells ESPN. The two sides still now have until July 15 to work out a long-term deal,” Schefter wrote on his Twitter account.

Prescott and the Cowboys already have some talks about the long term contract, but they didn’t end successfully. The problem was the length of the deal because the players want it to be four years, while on the other side, Dallas wishes to sign a five-year contract with him.

The catch about that one year is next. The NFL will get a new deal for TV rights after that fourth year of his contract, which would significantly increase the salary cap. Prescott intends to be a free agent that summer, with 30 years – basically the biggest star on the market. That would no doubt put a super-lucrative offer for him on the table.

Meanwhile, the fans are very unhappy with the current development of the situation and are afraid that the relationship between the franchise and Prescott might head in the wrong direction.

Franchise tags have been problematic in the recent past, with all the big names often making problems when it comes to this type of contract. Losing Prescott or having him play without any motivation would be disastrous for the Cowboys, who are trying to become a Super Bowl contender.

They already have Ezekiel Elliot and Amari Cooper long-term, but the final piece of the puzzle and the team’s brain is still not signed. Meanwhile, Dallas brought Andy Dalton as the backup QB, just in case something goes wrong with Prescott’s negotiations or his attitude.

Salary Cap Problems

We’ve mentioned that Dallas signed both Elliot and Cooper recently, and if they offer Prescott a deal he’s aiming for, the situation with finances would be very difficult for the franchise from Texas. Apparently, the QB’s annual salary would be around $35 million, which is the sum Russell Wilson has as the highest-paid quarterback in the league.

With all other stars on the team, Jerry Jones would have to secure a massive amount of money.

Prescott and the Cowboys went 8-8 last year, with the note that they missed the playoffs, and that this .500 record is the worst since he got to the league. That resulted in a change at the head coaching position with Jason Garrett being replaced with Mike McCarthy.
