Canada defeats the USMNT after 34 years of waiting, 2-0

After 34 years of waiting, the Canadian soccer team has finally defeated the United States. In front of more than 17,000 spectators at the BMO Field in Toronto, John Herdman’s boys won 2-0, posting a massive win.

These three points were especially important for the Canadian team, as they now sit on top of Group A of the CONCACAF Nations League. But also, after beating the Americans, Canada jumped over El Salvador on the FIFA rankings, meaning that Herdman’s crew is now sixth among the CONCACAF countries. It is something vital for the future of the team, as only six nations from this zone participate in the qualifiers for the upcoming World Cup held in Qatar.

Canada’s primary goal is to reach that stage and then try to make another surprise and win one of the top three places, which lead to the World Cup.

“This is unbelievable. Unbelievable … We showed that we have a young team who’s going to bring new football to Canada,” added veteran goalkeeper Milan Borjan who has been one of the cornerstones of this unit.

The scorers for the Canadian team were the teenage sensation Alphonso Davies and Lucas Cavallini. But although the result might seem a routine one, things weren’t that easy on the pitch.

Canada’s no.1 star LAFC’s Mark Anthony Kaye had to leave the game after just five minutes, due to a hamstring injury. However, that seemed to motivate his teammates, who looked ferocious on the BMO Field, pressuring Americans all over the place, not allowing them to breathe.

There was no lost possession for the Canadians, as the entire crew worked hard to correct their mistakes, and eventually, they outmuscled the US team. It was a display of a fighting attitude, which Herdman wanted to develop since he took over the wheel.

After a goalless first half, the hosts turned up the tempo, breaking the ice in the 63rd minute. Bayern Munich’s young star, Alphonso Davies, reacted excellently after Michael Bradley made a mistake in the back line. He followed the whole situation, and after a crowd in the goalkeeper area, tapped the ball into the net.

“There was many emotions going through me; you don’t know how to act,” Davies said. “Especially when the whole team is running towards you. People step on your ankles. The energy is pumping, so you don’t feel it until afterward.”

The Americans tried to turn back the momentum, but couldn’t do it. Canada’s players were fired up after an opener, and they completely neutralized the midfield of Gregg Berhalter’s team. The US head coach stated that his team couldn’t compete with the rival’s will and energy.

Cavallini sealed the match in the stoppage time, with a nice strike from the edge of the box, following Jonathan Osorio’s pass.

The next match between these two sides will be on November 15, only this time the USA is the host in Orlando, Florida. Until then, Canada is first in the group with 9 points from three games and a goal difference of 9 goals scored without a single one allowed.
