Montreal Canadiens suffered one of the toughest defeats at home over the recent few years and possibly a few decades. Claude Julien’s team was heavily beaten at Bell Centre, against the Boston Bruins, 1-8.
David Pastrnak with three goals and Brad Marchand with a goal and two assists were terrorizing the home team, who didn’t have a solution for stopping them.
For Pastrnak, the final result isn’t very important. The 23-year old is more interested in getting two points, than posting a massive victory.
“Obviously, two points is two points, no matter how you get there. You know, if you 1-0 or 8-1, it doesn’t matter for tomorrow. But you can enjoy it tonight and get some confidence,” he said.
Montreal’s goalie, Carey Price, has been experiencing some pretty nasty moments over a recent couple of days. The Canadiens have five straight losses, and during that span, Julien’s team allowed 25 goals. In the latest two against the Rangers and Bruins, that figure went up to 14.
“We can’t dwell on it for too long. I’ve been in this game long enough to know you can’t pout your way out of a situation like this one,” he added.
Price was pulled away in the second frame after he conceded five goals in 11 shots towards his net. The last time he had to leave the game was all the way in 2017.
Jake DeBruks scored a power-play goal for the guests at 8:03 to give the lead to the Bruins. The Canadiens responded through Shea Weber at 12:41 of the same.
Pastrnak jumped in then, posting his first score of the night on another power-play 103 seconds following the equalizer.
Marchand extended the lead 37 seconds until the end of the opening period.
At that point, it still seemed that the home team might have some chances for a comeback. But as soon as the second period started, all those hopes disappeared. The Canadiens suffered knockout in just 70 seconds, as they conceded two more goals.
Pastrnak shocked the home-team fans eight seconds into the second, and Anders Bjork made it 5-1 at 1:10. At that point, Julien decided to replace Price, who allowed five goals on 11 shots and bring in Keith Kinkaid. However, that didn’t help the hosts very much. It was Pastrnak who beat him at 9:06 for his third of the contest.
Charlie Coyle executed on Sean Kuraly’s third assist of the match for 7-1, and Danton Heinen put an end of this glorious night for the Bruins when he scored the last goal of this match with 2:02 before the end.
“The mistakes are costing us,” said coach Julien. “We have to fix that if we hope to get back on track. It’s a loss of focus. Right now, those mistakes are more than they were before. We’re trending in the wrong direction.”
The Canadiens are hosting the New Jersey Devils on Thursday, in the hope of snapping their five-game losing streak. On the other side, the Bruins are going to Ottawa to face the Senators this Wednesday.
