Amanda Nunes Defends the Belt at UFC 250; Conor Retires Again

  • Amanda Nunes defended her featherweight title, beating Felicia Spencer last night.
  • The Lioness was dominant throughout the entire bout.
  • Cody Garbrandt also won, with Cory Sandhagen losing to Aljamain Sterling.
  • Conor McGregor revealed his retirement plans during the UFC 250.

Nunes’ 11th Straight Win

After beating Felicia Spencer, Amanda Nunes became the first female UFC member to defend one title, and to hold one more in another division. That would immediately spark the debates about whether she is the best ever in female competition. While the opinions are divided in the MMA community, the featherweight and bantamweight UFC champion has no doubts regarding the answer.

“I’m defending both belts. I’m the greatest,” Nunes said. “I’m so happy now. I don’t know what’s next. But I proved it already.”

Her win at the UFC 250 was more than confident, with Spencer taking an enormous amount of damage. Some experts were a bit surprised that her corner didn’t stop the bout, as Nunes literally rolled over the Canadian fighter.

Spencer’s stubbornest and will to keep on going even though Nunes was far more superior are something that also needs to be credited. She became only the third fighter to endure all five rounds against Nunes, with Valentina Shevchenko doing that twice, and Germaine de Randamie once.

Nunes stated that she had to be aggressive all along and that this tactic was necessary to avoid any possible problems against her challenger.

“I’m not surprised. I know she’s very tough. I know what she’s capable of,” Nunes stated about Spencer. “I knew if I have to go five rounds, I have to dominate. I have to be as sharp as a cactus.”

The Lioness now has 13 wins, the most among the ladies in the UFC, and has eight title fights, in which she defeated five champions (former and current at the time). This was her 11th straight victory with the note that she didn’t lose since 2014.

When talking about other events, Cody Garbrandt defeated Raphael Assuncao and is ready to attack the bantamweight title in men’s’ competition. The American calls for a tournament that would decide the new champion of this division, after that place became vacated due to Henry Cejudo’s retirement.

Aljamain Sterling surprised and defeated Cory Sandhagen.

McGregor Retires Again

Whether this is another publicity stunt or something else, Conor McGregor’s announcement that he retires again drew enormous attention. The former two-division champ, and one of the biggest names in the history of the MMA, posted a status on his Twitter account that he leaves professional fighting.

“Hey, guys, I’ve decided to retire from fighting. Thank you all for the amazing memories! What a ride it’s been!”

Conor recently received an offer from Kamaru Usman to fight him. The Nigerian Nightmare wanted to put his welterweight belt on the table, and book one of the biggest shows in the UFC. However, after this development, that probably won’t happen.
