One of the most talented players in the world, and a member of Canada’s national soccer team, Alphonso Davies will stay in Bayern Munich longer than expected. The player and the team signed an extension that would keep him in Bavaria until 2025. His original contract was until 2023, but excellent performances and youngster’s enormous talent forced one of the biggest clubs in the world to secure him for a longer period.
“I am very happy. FC Bayern is one of the best clubs in the world, and for me, it’s a dream come true to play here. I felt happy from day one. I want to win as many titles as possible with this club. The mentality of always wanting to win everything is in FC Bayern’s DNA,” the player said, following the closure of the deal.
Davies became the irreplaceable piece in Bayern’s machinery, and since the season began, he appeared in 31 games, netting once and assisting on eight occasions. But not only that. His contribution to the defensive part of the game is fantastic, with his energy and decision-making, eclipsing all the expectations fans had before the campaign started. The maturity of this teenager is far ahead of his age. It is no wonder why Bayern’s CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge praised his mentality.
“He delights our fans not only with the way he plays, but also with the way he is off the pitch.”
Davies is projected to be the left-back in the starting lineup, but his versatility allows him to play as a left midfielder and even as the center-back in some situations. With the time passing by, Flick is used David Alaba more at the center-back position, which opened the spot for Davies. Of course, the 19-year old seized the opportunity.
Bayern is topping the Bundesliga standing and is in an excellent position to reach the quarterfinals of the Champions League. They have a 3-0 advantage against Chelsea from the first leg played in London. So pretty much, only a miracle can separate them form eight best clubs in Europe.
The five-time European Champions opened the season pretty badly, and they even had to change the head coach, replacing Niko Kovac with Hansi Flick, who did a fantastic job so far. He not only improved the results but brought back the old style of play, which involves constant attacking and pressuring the opponent. It was something that was abandoned during Kovac’s stint.
In the meantime, Davies became one of the cornerstones of the Canadian national team. During 2019 he played 8 games scoring two goals and was a part of the team that finished fifth at the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
